Dr. Jiwani is an optometrist that serves the Annex and U of T area community, providing eye exams, contact lenses and fashionable eyewear to have you looking and seeing your best!
Why are regular eye exams necessary?
An eye exam is the best indication of your overall eye health. Sometimes even with perfect vision a patient may have other conditions they are unaware of. It’s important to catch these conditions early on to avoid vision loss. Our eye exams begin by evaluating a patient’s history to determine their needs and concerns. This is followed by checking visual acuity, testing binocular vision and then determining the correct prescription if needed. The health of the eyes is also checked through a retinal scan which allows us to screen for conditions such as: macular degeneration, cataracts, retinal disease and glaucoma. These diseases are occurring younger and younger and can be hereditary which is why it’s important to be screened at every age.
What are common risks to eye health?
There are many things that can contribute to poor eye health. Lifestyle, genetics, disease…which is why its so important to have a qualified optometrist who will stay on top of things. Your eye health is important to us. Eyesight affects our quality of life and protecting the health of your eyes and preventing eye issues is why it’s important to have regular eye exams.
One of the things we can do something about when it comes to our eye health is to make certain lifestyle changes. Lifestyle factors can negatively impact your vision. CVS or computer vision syndrome caused by time on tablets, computers and e-readers and phones is one example. Though many visual symptoms are temporary and will stop after users cease using their digital device, according to the American Optometric Association, “Some individuals may experience continued reduced visual abilities, such as blurred distance vision, even after stopping work at a computer. If nothing is done to address the cause of the problem, the symptoms will continue to recur and perhaps worsen with future digital screen use.”
Having your eyes checked if you experience dry eye or blurry vision after screen time that won’t go away is important to make sure you aren’t doing permanent damage. Another life style choice that can influence our eye health is poor diet, according to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The American Optometric Association agrees. “High blood sugar can lead to swelling and changes in the lens and may put you at a higher risk of developing cataracts.”
Students may be at a higher risk of developing conditions due to time spent on screens and high sugar, high carbohydrate diets. As an active member of the Canadian Association of Optometry, Dr. Jiwani, is happy to provide students with regular eye exams to ensure their habits aren’t hindering their sight and future eye health. For those who require vision correction, we also offer the latest in contact lenses, or fashionable eyewear.
